Makerspace lesson plans are organized into five categories.
- Literacy – Lesson plans to integrate making activities with literacy.
- Science – Lesson plans to align making to NGSS in K-5.
- Social Studies – Lesson plans to align making activities to K-5 Social Studies content.
- Math – Lesson plans to align making activities to K-5 Math content.
- Introduction to Making – Lesson plans to introduce making activities to K-5.
Making & Literacy
A series of books aligned to making activities in K-5. Most can be adapted to any grade level.
Making & Science
In public schools, requirements around standardized testing create pressure to align making activities to content standards, not as a separate class or activity. Research points to a clear connection between NGSS engineering practices and maker-centered learning. (NRC, 2012; Quinn and Bell, 2013; Martin, 2015). Here are examples of lessons that integrate making and science aligned to NGSS.
Making & Social Studies
Maps, historical figures, timelines, and technological discoveries create rich opportunities to integrate computer science projects and making activities into K-5 social studies content.
Making & Math
Math provides unique opportunities to integrate computer science and robotics into core content.
Introduction to Making
Introductory making activities can be done early in the school year to teach makerspace rules and routines, to train student on using equipment safely, and to introduce the engineering design process.
